New Sanctions for Violating Temporary Vehicle Import Rules in Turkey

An important warning has been issued to citizens who enter Turkey with vehicles bearing foreign license plates and plan to leave their vehicles in the country upon departure.

Starting from 2026, the administrative fine for leaving a vehicle in Turkey without notifying customs authorities has been increased. According to published data, the amount of this fine has risen by approximately twenty-five percent compared to the previous year.

This regulation particularly affects Turkish citizens residing in Europe who travel to Turkey by car during their annual leave or holiday periods.

Authorities have reminded that the entry of foreign-plated vehicles into Turkey is permitted under the temporary import regime; however, failure to comply with the rules governing such vehicles results in serious sanctions.

Under the new regulation, citizens who leave a foreign-plated vehicle in Turkey without notifying customs authorities will be subject to an administrative fine of 11,952 Turkish liras.

According to the applicable legislation, this fine is imposed once only for all departures made prior to the date the violation is detected.

However, if the violation continues or new circumstances related to the condition or status of the vehicle are identified, additional sanctions may be imposed.
